The North Haven DTC Supports the UFCW Union Workers on Strike at Stop & Shop

Resolution in Support of UFCW Local 371 and UFCW Local 919 Members

WHEREAS 31,000 United Food and Commercial Workers from five local unions throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island have worked for months to negotiate a fair contract with their employer, Stop & Shop; and

WHEREAS UFCW Local 371 and UFCW Local 919 represent workers employed at Connecticut Stop & Shop stores including cashiers, stockers, bakers, deli clerks and butchers; and

WHEREAS Stop & Shop’s “final offer” to workers represents a massive step backward, including significant cuts to healthcare, substantial increases to healthcare premiums, and the replacement of wage increases with “so-called’ one-time bonuses, all of which would mean reduced weekly earnings for many workers; and

WHEREAS Stop & Shop’s parent company, Ahold Delhaize, reported over $2 billion in profits last year and got a federal tax cut of $225 million in 2017, but still seeks draconian worker concessions; and

WHEREAS Ahold Delhaize shareholders voted April 10th to give themselves a 11.1% raise in dividends over last year for an expected payout of approximately $880 million on April 25th; and

WHEREAS UFCW members across Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, having voted to authorize a strike, walked off the job April 11th;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that members of the Executive Committee of the North Haven (Connecticut) Democratic Town Committee stand in solidarity with the 31,000 UFCW members who are fighting for affordable healthcare, a living wage and a secure retirement.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that members of the Executive Committee of the North Haven Democratic Town Committee will not cross any picket line and will cease shopping at Stop & Shop and Peapod Home Delivery for the duration of the strike; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the members of the Executive Committee of the North Haven Democratic Town Committee offer their full support to help workers win a fair contract by joining workers on picket lines whenever they can, signing UFCW’s online petition notifying Stop & Shop management that they stand united with workers, and continuing to shop at other grocery stores.
